I got my GEN-Y covers in the mail 2 days ago, and since the timing was off a bit, I had to wait a day to wash them. The company's website recommended washing the covers once in hot water to prevent the colors from bleeding in the regular diaper laundry, so I threw them in for a hot wash with my towels. I was very excited to try these covers, since I've read tons of rave reviews online! This was also the first diaper that my husband was just as excited about as I was... he is in love with the Oh, Gnome print. :)
These diapers have a hefty feel to them, like the Weehuggers. They also have a separate PUL inner layer and cotton outer, and the prints are adorable! I have to give GEN-Y some mad props for having the most awesome prints available in popular diaper covers. The inner PUL is exposed, which I like for the ease of wiping it down and reusing after a pee explosion (if it's poop, it still goes in the wash). The elastic on these seems to be a bit stiffer than I'm used to, but it may just be that it's heavier-duty than my other covers. The prints I ordered all have a colored elastic cover on the gussets, which is a feature I appreciate since it won't show stains as easily. The flaps inside are very similar to the Weehuggers flaps in that they can hold a trifolded prefold or other insert in place, and are very nice and soft up next to baby's skin. They're also 100% cotton, which we appreciate since Cora has some super-sensitive skin.
As for the fit, I found myself unfortunately underwhelmed. This cover seems much smaller than both the Weehuggers size 1 and Thirsties Duo size 1, even though they all claim to fit to around 18 pounds. I had a more difficult time than usual fitting my prefold into the cover. A GMD yellow-edge prefold just barely fits with a lot of maneuvering... these same prefolds fit easily in my Weehuggers and Thirsties! The side-snapping closure is something I'll have to get used to. I'm sure it's not actually more difficult than normal snaps, but in my inexperience I have had a seriously difficult time getting my wiggly baby snapped into these covers! I love that I can adjust the waist and thighs on this cover separately, making for a better fit on my skinny babe with some seriously chunky thighs. My main problem with this diaper cover is the rise, which seems to be a lot shorter than my other covers with the same weight range. These claim to have a bigger rise than the Weehuggers by an inch, but to be honest, I'm not seeing it! This cover just looks a bit funny on my baby... it has an odd front bulge that I'm not used to seeing. So far we haven't had any issues with wicking or leaking, but this cover has yet to endure the poop test... however, I think it will do just fine!
All in all, I'll admit I was a bit disappointed in this cover. Don't get me wrong, it works wonderfully... but the rise and look are a bit strange on Cora. I will absolutely keep using this cover and hope it grows on me, since the fabrics are just too cute not to!
Baby's dimensions at time of review:
weight - 14.5 lbs
length - 27 in
